Finding Happiness After Divorce

The Huron Valley Networking Group provides regular food for thought at the Tuesday morning meetings. Often the inspirational advice is delivered courtesy of local Milford realtor Norm Werner of Real Estate One. A recent education moment focused on the article, “Wise Habits of Supremely Happy People,” by Dr. Travis Bradberry. Some of the advice seemed especially applicable to those recovering from traumatic law events like divorce or a probate battle. So we’d like to share some ideas for finding happiness after divorce here.

For instance, Dr. Bradberry suggests the following tips for building happiness:

  • Exercise – The article suggests, “Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses.”
  • Share the wealth – buy little gifts for special friends
  • Enjoy the little things
  • Stay Positive
  • Sleep well
  • Engage in meaningful, deep conversations – Avoid gossip and petty interactions.
  • Volunteer
  • Avoid isolation – The article specifically recommends forgoing technology when reaching out for personal support. “The human brain is wired for in-person interaction, so happy people will jump at the chance to drive across town to see a friend or meet face-to-face because it makes them feel good.”

One piece of advice that is particularly applicable to creating happiness after divorce is to keep a growth mindset. As Dr. Bradberry explains, “With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when you’re challenged, because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed. People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort.”

There are few life events that provide more challenge than a contentious divorce. Those who accept that divorce is a life-altering and try to find the positives can be the most successful at moving forward. Those with a fixed mindset resist the change. They sometimes get stuck trying to get back to the way things used to be.
